Hinge Introduces AI Feature for Dating Recommendations

Hinge unveils AI feature for personalized dating advice.

The dating app Hinge has unveiled an AI feature called Convo Starters, which provides personalized conversation-starting advice. This was reported by TechCrunch.

Many users of the company express frustration when matched with partners who merely like profiles without initiating conversation. This often leads to awkward silence, placing the burden of making the first move on one individual.

Instead of creative introductions, users frequently begin dialogues with standard phrases like “How are you?”

Convo Starters offers three personalized tips under each photo. The AI assesses the user’s profile and generates recommendations based on images or prompts. For instance, if a potential partner is pictured at a chessboard, Hinge might suggest starting a conversation about board games.

Hinge emphasized that the new functionality was developed in response to user demand. Company research indicated that 72% of users are more likely to consider someone a potential partner if a like is accompanied by a message.

Those who add a comment are twice as likely to arrange a date.

Hinge is a popular American dating app positioned as a platform for finding serious relationships. For a long time, its slogan was the app designed to be deleted—an app you should delete once you find a partner.

Convo Starters may not appeal to everyone. A Bloomberg Intelligence survey revealed that millennials feel less comfortable using AI for profile creation or responding to messages.

Despite this, AI is increasingly becoming a tool for dating. In April, Tinder launched a neural network-based game to train flirting skills.

The game offers a deck of cards, each depicting different AI personalities and scenarios. The goal is to secure a date with a bot through voice interaction.

During the dialogue, the AI provides advice. For example, if a user is rude or behaves inappropriately, the AI might suggest toning down the sarcasm or moving on to other topics. At the end, a score is given on a three-point scale.

Back in 2021, the total damage from fraud in online dating services reached $547 million, with one-fifth of this amount involving cryptocurrencies.
