Alphabet to spin out Sandbox Technology as a dedicated quantum‑computing company
Alphabet plans to spin out Sandbox Technology, a group developing quantum computing, into a separate company. The corporation is incubating a secret startup within its Moonshot venture programme, according to Business Insider.
According to the report, the new company will be led by the current head of the division, Jack Hidary. He has filed to form SB Technologies Inc., for which the website sandboxquantum.com has already been registered.
Spinning out Sandbox could simplify fundraising and recruitment, as well as provide other operational advantages. The corporation declined to comment on the formation of SB Technologies.
Alphabet and Google have been working on quantum technologies for many years, aiming to compete with Cambridge Quantum, various researchers, IBM and other firms for the next generation of computing.
News of the secret unit’s existence first came to light in January 2020. It is believed that it was founded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
Earlier, in May 2021, IBM announced a 120-fold acceleration in data processing with quantum computers and introduced the Qiskit Runtime service.
In the same month, Google announced at the I/O conference plans to build the first commercial quantum computer by 2029.
In June IBM announced the opening of the centre for quantum computing and artificial intelligence in the United Kingdom.
