The Austrian postal service will present a series of Crypto Stamp 3.0 digital stamps as NFTs.

A total of 100,000 stamps will be issued featuring whales. Each will cost €9.90 ($12).

Embedded NFC chips will allow verification of the authenticity of non-fungible tokens.

“No separate app is required for this; the NFC chip directs to a dedicated site for the copy of the stamp. Until the code is activated, the user sees a sleeping whale. When scanning the QR code — the whale comes to life,” the organisation said.

The digital copy of the postage stamp is generated randomly, yielding one of five colours: black, green, blue, yellow or red.

Pre-orders for the stamps will open in June.

The Austrian postal service began issuing stamps using NFT technology as early as 2019.
