Bitfury to launch a 28 MW mining data centre in Sarnia, Ontario

Bitfury Group, one of the early pioneers of the mining industry, announced the launch of a new cryptocurrency mining centre with a capacity of 28 MW in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.

The facility is expected to commence operations by the end of February. Initial power consumption will be 16 MW. By the end of May, an additional 12 MW will be brought online.

The potential for further expansion of the facility’s capacity is 200 MW.

\n\n\n

The Sarnia facility is fully equipped with Bitfury’s specialized software and mining hardware.

\n\n\n

The new facility complements the company’s network of cryptocurrency mining centres, located in North America, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

\n\n\n

“North America remains an attractive strategic market for Bitfury and the mining industry as a whole,” said Oleg Blinkov, Director of Development and Operations for the company’s data centres.

\n\n\n

Canada, like the United States and Kazakhstan, emerged as a key destination for Chinese miners after the crackdown on the industry in China. From May to August 2021 these jurisdictions doubled their shares of Bitcoin hashrate, with the United States taking the lead on the metric.

\n\n\n

However, Kazakhstan could not cope with the influx of additional large power consumers. In February, it was reported that legitimate participants in the industry removed about 30% of the equipment from the country.

\n\n\n

In the United States and Canada, miners continue to ramp up cryptocurrency mining capacity and expand infrastructure.

\n\n\n

In November 2021, Bitfury named Brian Brooks CEO, the former head of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency within the U.S. Treasury and Binance’s U.S. arm.

Earlier reports indicated that the company aimed to go public.
