Butyrka prison leadership suspected of illegal mining

The Investigative Committee has begun a probe into one of the leaders of the Butyrka prison for involvement in the illegal organisation of cryptocurrency mining on the detention facility’s grounds. According to «Ъ».

According to investigators, in November 2021 the suspect, together with accomplices, installed mining equipment in a branch of the FSIN’s psychiatric hospital located at the Butyrka prison.

Preliminarily, the devices operated until February this year. To power the equipment, more than 62,000 rubles worth of electricity was used.

Law-enforcement authorities are examining one of the detention facility’s deputy heads for possible abuse of power.

In January, in Moscow, employees of the Rosseti Moscow Region branch disconnected 50 mining servers.
