Coinbase's Base L2 solution opens mainnet to developers

The Coinbase-supported Layer 2 network Base opened access to the mainnet for developers of dapps ahead of the protocol’s public launch in August.

Base is built on Optimism’s OP Stack and operates as an Ethereum rollup network. The team stressed that it does not plan to launch its own token and that projects should migrate to proxy contracts using only ETH.

Even before the public release, developers can access a range of services, including:

The Base team noted that ahead of the mainnet launch it conducted a series of in-depth security checks with more than 100 researchers.

Hardfork Bedrock in the Optimism network helped developers verify the stability of the software underpinning Base. The update also reduced transaction fees, shortened deposit times and boosted node performance.

The success of the Optimism upgrade, along with the stability of the Base testnet after the Regolith hard fork, the team said it was among the five prerequisites for the mainnet launch.

Earlier, the team launched the Base testnet in February 2023.
