Court sentences Syktyvkar miner for theft of electricity worth 5.7 million rubles

In Syktyvkar, a local resident has been convicted of illicitly connecting to power grids to mine cryptocurrency. The Komi Republic prosecutor’s office сообщили.

The court found that in 2015 a 39-year-old resident of Syktyvkar leased a non-residential building and placed a mining farm there to mine cryptocurrency. He illegally connected his computer to the transformer station of the enterprise from which he leased the site.

Over five years of operation, the mining farm consumed 1.3 million kWh of electricity. The damage to the organization maintaining the building amounted to 5.7 million rubles.

The defendant admitted guilt. He received a two-year suspended sentence with a two-year probation period.

Earlier ForkLog reported that energy workers in the Novosibirsk region found a mining-farm in an old truck.
