Dagestan launches crackdown on illegally connected cryptocurrency miners

Dagestan Prime Minister Abdulpatakh Amirkhanov held a meeting, where countermeasures against illegal electricity consumption for cryptocurrency mining were discussed.

According to Amirkhanov, the activity of illegally connected miners leads to electricity shortages, prompting the regional authorities to intensify the search for such mining farms.

In several Dagestan districts, authorities have already identified and stopped the activities of illegally connected miners.

Authorities also ordered the local Ministry of Energy to report on the discovered mining farms, specifying the number of identified facilities as well as any administrative and criminal cases.

Mining in Russia is not prohibited and is not yet regulated by law; however, unauthorized connection to power networks or theft of electricity for cryptocurrency mining is a crime.

Dagestan is a leader among the North Caucasus regions in the number of detected cases of electricity theft for cryptocurrency mining. Since the start of the year, the damage has exceeded 70 million rubles.
