DeSantis vows to outlaw CBDC in Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke out against the idea of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and vowed to ban the federal government’s technology in his jurisdiction.

“They want to get rid of cryptocurrency. […] In Florida, a ban on CBDC will be put in place to ensure there is no state financial surveillance,” the politician said.

In the governor’s view, the U.S. authorities “do not like digital assets because they cannot control them.”

He also подписал закон, aimed at countering ESG standards. The document prohibits the use of Florida funds for investments in this area.

The politician said he was determined to fight ESG and CBDC in his state for financial independence.

DeSantis is known for his commitment to cryptocurrencies. In March he approved a law introducing in schools programs to improve financial literacy, including on digital assets.

In April, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of the 35th U.S. president John F. Kennedy, criticised CBDC, calling the instrument “the ultimate mechanism of social monitoring and control.” The Florida governor joined him, saying that issuing institutions would abuse the technology.

Earlier in May, Kennedy Jr. criticised SEC and FDIC for the “war on cryptocurrency,” which, in his view, led to a banking crisis in the United States.
