Do Kwon’s Extradition to the US Halted by Montenegro Court
The Montenegrin Court of Appeals has overturned the approval of Do Kwon’s extradition to the United States. This marks the third successful appeal by the Terraform Labs co-founder, reports The Block.
Previously, Kwon had similar extradition requests to the US and South Korea dismissed on December 19 and February 8, respectively.
The appellate court cited procedural issues once more, particularly the lack of clear justification and facts in the High Court’s decision.
The case will now return to the lower court for reconsideration.
On March 23, 2023, Montenegrin police arrested Kwon and former Terraform Labs CFO Han Chang-Joon as they attempted to fly from Podgorica airport to Dubai using fake passports.
The arrest was made at the request of law enforcement agencies from the US, South Korea, and Singapore.
Korean authorities have filed numerous charges against Kwon, including violations of capital markets law.
In the US, he is involved in a fraud case led by the SEC and the New York Federal Prosecutor’s Office.
Earlier in February 2024, Montenegrin authorities extradited the former CFO of Terraform Labs to South Korean authorities.
