ECB files for trademark registration of 'digital euro'

Lawyers from the European Central Bank (ECB) have filed an application to register the trademark ‘digital euro’. The information about this has been published on the website of the EU Intellectual Property Office.

The application was filed on 22 September, although the regulator has yet to decide on the final decision regarding the digital euro. In the near term, the working group is expected to present a report on the feasibility of issuing the new payment instrument.

Earlier, ECB president Christine Lagarde spoke repeatedly on the issue of issuing digital currencies. In her recent address, she emphasized the need to stay abreast of global changes in the financial system, driven by both technological progress and rising protectionism.

Lagarde clarified that the digital euro will be merely an alternative. The fiat currency will remain at the core of the European payment system.
