In the coming weeks, the Ropsten test network will be shut down as obsolete, according to the Ethereum Foundation team.

“The overwhelming majority of the remaining validator nodes will be shut down between December 15 and 31, 2022. After that, Ropsten will no longer be supported by client, test or infrastructure teams,” according to the organization’s blog.
Another testnet, Rinkeby, will be shut down by mid-2023. The Ethereum Foundation recommended developers and users to switch to Goerli or Sepolia.
The team reminded that The Merge update was not planned for Rinkeby, so it cannot serve as an equivalent to the mainnet.
As noted, the developers translated Ropsten to the Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm in June.
