EurocoinPay and Mastercard to issue cryptocurrency debit cards
Spanish-licensed trading platform EurocoinPay has agreed with payments giant Mastercard to issue a cryptocurrency debit card. Original tweet announcing has been deleted at the time of writing, but the company cites a number of local media outlets.
The card will allow EurocoinPay users from the European Union to shop at more than 90 million stores worldwide.
According to EurocoinPay CEO Erminio Fernández de Blas, the debit card is needed to popularise cryptocurrency, as it opens mass access to purchases with digital assets.
Cardholders must meet EurocoinPay’s requirements and pass Mastercard’s AML screening.
Earlier in April, the crypto-lending platform Nexo announced the launch of Nexo Card on Mastercard for the European market. The card issuer will be DiPocket.
In February, the crypto exchange FTX announced the release of a Visa debit card and opened a waiting list. Similar statements were made by online broker Robinhood and hardware wallet maker Ledger.
Previously Visa had approved launching such a payment solution with several companies, including Binance, Bakkt, BlockFi and CryptoSpend.
In 2021, the American Gemini exchange and the Australian CoinJar platform issued cryptocurrency cards with Mastercard support.
