HRF explains how Bitcoin helps safeguard rights and freedoms

The HRF’s chief strategist, Alex Gladstein, said that millions of people around the world rely on Bitcoin to “escape high inflation, frozen accounts, sanctions and financial isolation.”

Gladstein said this in response to a Twitter user who described Bitcoin as a vehicle for speculation.

To illustrate his point, he cited examples of how people in different countries use cryptocurrency to protect their rights and freedoms.

According to him, decentralised networks, the BYSOL Solidarity Fund transferred more than $500,000 to protesters in Belarus, as their bank accounts could be blocked.

Also, via the BTCPay Server processing service, donations were received by human rights defenders in Nigeria and Hong Kong, and transfers of savings into Bitcoin helped Venezuelan refugees preserve their funds as they left the country, Gladstein noted.

“Palestinians, Argentinians, Lebanese, Sudanese and Filipinos are among the populations who find Bitcoin very useful. I could go on and on. This is happening, it’s a global phenomenon,” wrote the HRF’s chief strategist.

According to Gladstein, Bitcoin is “far more useful globally than five years ago”:

“as a store of value, as a cross-border payments instrument, and as money of freedom.”

Earlier, in March, HRF announced that it would accept donations in Bitcoin via BTC Pay Server.

In June, HRF launched a developers’ support fund aimed at enhancing Bitcoin anonymity features.
