Malaysia cracks down on illegal cryptocurrency mining

Malaysia’s electricity supplier Sarawak Energy uncovered a mining farm in Miri, on the island of Borneo, whose owners were involved in illegal cryptocurrency mining. local media report.

The farm consisted of 34 ASIC miners, connected to the grid via cable tapping. The perpetrators were identified following a public complaint.

According to Sarawak Energy, the owners of the equipment were siphoning electricity for about 6,000 Malaysian ringgits per month ($1,300). Authorities seized the mining devices.

The case is being investigated by the police.

Earlier in Miri, city authorities confiscated more than 137 ASIC miners. In July 2021, local police destroyed a batch of 1,069 devices, seized during raids.
