Media: Google Invests $300m in ChatGPT Rival

At the end of 2022, Google invested about $300 million in the AI startup Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees. The Financial Times reports this.

According to the publication, the tech giant received 10% of the startup’s shares.

Anthropic also announced that it chose Google Cloud as its preferred cloud service provider. The partnership will allow companies to jointly build computing systems for artificial intelligence.

“The startup will use large-scale clusters GPU and TPU of the next generation for training, scaling and deployment of AI solutions,” according to the press release.

According to Anthropic, the collaboration will provide the necessary performance and scalability of the cloud infrastructure.

The startup is developing a potential competitor to ChatGPT—a universal chatbot named Claude. The company said that the algorithm is based on research in the field of safe artificial intelligence.

“We aim to use Google’s cloud infrastructure to develop reliable, interpretable and controllable AI systems,” Anthropic said.

Claude is in closed beta testing. It is not yet clear whether Google plans to integrate the technology into its services.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI VP of Research Dario Amodei. He left the AI lab over “differences regarding the company’s development” and took with him other staff, including leading GPT-3 language-model engineer Tom Brown.

Earlier in February, Alphabet and Google chief Sundar Pichai announced the launch of a competitor to ChatGPT in the near future.

In January, it emerged that Microsoft was making ‘multi-year, multi-billion’ investments in OpenAI. Earlier reports said the deal was worth $10 billion.

In December 2022, OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT chatbot, capable of answering questions, admitting mistakes, arguing and declining inappropriate requests.
