According to company representatives, NLLB-200 demonstrated ‘high translation quality’ for 55 African languages. Before the algorithm’s creation, fewer than 25 African languages were covered by widely used tools, the developers said.
Meta says that NLLB-200’s performance in the FLORES-101 test surpassed existing modern models by an average of 44%. For some African and Indian dialects, the advantage over counterparts reached 70%.

Meta said that their development would improve the quality of translations on Facebook and Instagram, as well as on third-party services such as Wikipedia.
The company has made the NLLB-200 source code available on GitHub. The developers created a site demonstrating how the new model works.
Meta also announced a grant program of $200,000. Non-profit organisations can apply to explore real-world applications of NLLB-200.
Earlier in June, Meta announced a reorganisation of its AI division.
In April, the company unveiled the open-source language model OPT-175B.
