MetaMask Introduces Bitcoin Support

MetaMask announces full Bitcoin integration.

The popular Web3 wallet MetaMask has announced full integration of the first cryptocurrency.

Developers first announced plans to add Bitcoin in February.

Users can now perform all major operations with digital gold in the MetaMask interface: buying, exchanging for other coins, sending, and receiving. Previously, the asset was available to clients only through wrapped alternatives of the ERC-20 standard.

The latest version of the wallet will initially support SegWit addresses. Taproot will be added “soon.”

Points are awarded for each exchange of the first cryptocurrency within MetaMask, the project team emphasized.

“Any Bitcoin transactions will appear in your asset list after confirmation. Remember: transactions are usually slower than in EVM or Solana networks,” the developers also warned.

Beyond Ethereum

MetaMask is steadily implementing a strategy to transform from a wallet for Ethereum and EVM blockchains into a multichain hub. The transformation began with the integration of Solana in May.

In August, support for Sei was introduced, followed by Monad in November. An expansion of the list of available networks is expected next year.

In October, MetaMask simplified address management across multiple blockchains. Users gained the ability to manage addresses in different networks from a single account.

In the same month, the wallet launched perpetual contract trading via Hyperliquid in the mobile app. Simultaneously, developers announced integration with the prediction platform Polymarket.
