Nebraska senator proposes using blockchain in agriculture

Nebraska state Senator Carol Blood has backed a bill to study the potential role of blockchain in agriculture.

According to the document, distributed ledger technology is to be used to track the origin of products—from farms to store shelves.

The bill’s author proposes monitoring production conditions—soil quality, equipment, weather and other factors—using blockchain. The technology would also be used to certify organic food products.

As part of the study, officials will assess blockchain as a means for asset exchanges and for the storage of products and equipment.

Nebraska is predominantly an agricultural state, where in 2019 farms and ranches accounted for more than 90% of the state’s land area, according to government data.

In May, the HumanVenture charity platform integrated the Free TON blockchain to issue food cards.

Earlier in Ukraine proposed to implement blockchain in the issuance and verification process of digital COVID-19 immunity certificates.
