Abkhazia restricts Internet access amid cryptocurrency mining

On 28 December, the Abkhazian State Committee for Communications, Mass Media and Digital Development issued an order for the temporary blocking of sites used by cryptocurrency miners.

“To introduce by 1 June 2021 a temporary restriction on subscribers in the information-telecommunications network ‘Internet’ of the ability to use the list of domain names, pointers to pages of sites and network addresses that enable cryptocurrency mining,” the document says.

Telecommunications operators were instructed to carry out technical measures to block access.

The list of specific sites whose access will be restricted is not provided.

Earlier in December, the cabinet of Abkhazia banned cryptocurrency mining and restricted the import of equipment for its deployment until 1 June 2021.

Police later reported the shutdown of 6981 ASIC-miner. However, some miners have managed to privately strike deals with the government to import equipment into the republic.

Due to the energy-intensive mining of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, Abkhazia has found itself on the brink of a crisis – the republic lacks electricity to meet the growing needs of its population and economy.
