Access problems hit PrivatBank, Oschadbank, and the Ukrainian defence ministry website

Customers of PrivatBank and Oschadbank are experiencing access issues, and the websites of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Ukraine are also down. According to this data from the Centre for Information Security of Ukraine, the outage was caused by a mass DDoS attack.

Update:

On the websites of the Ministry of Defence and Oschadbank, a maintenance page appeared.

According to PrivatBank customers, they are experiencing access issues in the app.

“Online banking sometimes logs in, but card balances do not display. The web version via the QR code also won’t load,” they told ForkLog in a comment.

Customers of Oschadbank also confirmed to editors that they have been experiencing login problems for a day.

Update:

Representatives of PrivatBank stated that there may be a delay in the operation of banking services. Clients’ funds are safe.

“The cyberattack affects exclusively the Privat24 app. All other monetary operations are carried out in the normal mode,” the Centre for Information Security said.

Oschadbank also confirmed the DDoS attack.

“All bank systems are protected and operate normally. Currently there is only a slowdown in logging into the Internet banking ‘Oschad 24/7’ due to additional load on the communication channels,” the statement reads.

Update:

The website of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine is down.

Update:

As of 19:30 Kyiv time, bank sites have been restored, said in the State Special Communications and Information Protection Service of Ukraine.

Update:

Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov said that the Diia portal was subjected to a powerful attack.

“The initial vector was Russia and China. About 600,000 malicious packets per second. Our specialists quickly cut off this direction, but the attack returned from the Czech Republic and Uzbekistan. And again it was repelled. For users the attack remained invisible,” the minister said on Telegram.

Co-founder of Monobank Oleg Gorohovsky said on Facebook that the DDoS attack is affecting “almost all Ukrainian banks with varying degrees of effectiveness”.

“Privat, Oschad. We tried Alfa and A-Bank. We started receiving massive requests from a node in the Netherlands. If the attack intensifies, we will be forced to temporarily disconnect the ‘external world’ and keep only Ukraine,” he wrote.

In the night of 14 January 2022, unknown hackers attacked more than 70 Ukrainian government resources, ten of which were subjected to unauthorized interference. According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the content of the sites was not changed and there were no personal data leaks.

Later, the CERT-UA Cyber Threat Response Team discovered a potential link between the attack on Ukrainian sites and a miner from the WEX exchange.
