AI to Protect Children on Instagram, Eminem Deepfake Track Created, and Other AI News
We aim to inform readers not only about developments in the Bitcoin industry, but also about what is happening in adjacent technology spheres — cybersecurity, and now the world of artificial intelligence (AI).
ForkLog has gathered the most important AI news from the past week.
- Future BMW electric cars will be equipped with the onboard AI iDrive 8, through which the driver can control vehicle functions without taking their hands off the wheel.
- Instagram will deploy AI to detect children’s profiles so that unfamiliar adults cannot send them private messages.
- Facebook introduced the Learning from Videos AI algorithm, which uses publicly available user videos to self-train.
- Microsoft moved the noise-cancellation feature from Teams to Skype, but only for desktop applications for now.
- A group of enthusiasts used the GPT-3 language model and recorded a deepfake Eminem track.
BMW unveils onboard AI iDrive 8 for future electric cars
BMW announced the release of an updated version of the iDrive 8 infotainment system, which will support natural language processing, gesture control, and cloud-based machine learning. The updated system will be onboard the upcoming iX and i4.
The onboard AI of the system, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, will be the main point of contact between the driver and iDrive 8. It will take external conditions, such as traffic and road conditions, into account before trying to interact with the vehicle occupants.
The AI will also control such functions as climate control, exterior lighting, audio playback, opening and closing windows, shading the panoramic glass roof, and switching between driver-assistance systems so as not to distract the driver from operating the vehicle. IPA can also provide information about the vehicle status and offer detailed information about local attractions.
“My Modes” — another new iDrive 8 feature, replacing the old drive-mode controls. It allows the driver to personalise and activate up to ten vehicle parameters in a single group of commands.
BMW also relies heavily on cloud-based machine learning to improve the responsiveness of IPA. For example, developers trained iDrive 8 to better anticipate drivers’ climate-control needs based on 440 million training trips from around the world. As a result, the assistant can automatically set the cabin to the optimal temperature, based not only on external conditions but also on the driver’s personal habits.
The first batches of BMW electric cars with the updated iDrive are slated for sale in early 2022.
AI to protect children on Instagram from adult strangers
Instagram introduced two new AI tools designed to protect young users of the social network.
The first feature will prevent adults from messaging people under 18 who do not follow them. When attempting to send a message, the system will notify him that he cannot send it from that account.
Instagram did not disclose how the system works, but the parent company Facebook said it uses AI to determine users’ ages.
“This feature is based on our work to forecast people’s ages using machine-learning technology and the age that people report to us during registration,” the developers said in Facebook’s blog.
The second feature sends prompts to teenage users encouraging them to be careful when talking to the adults with whom they already have a relationship.
The system first detects potentially suspicious behavior, such as when an adult sends a large number of friend requests or messages to a teen. It then inserts a safety notification into the recipient’s private messages and gives them the option to immediately stop communication, block, report, or restrict the suspicious adult user.
Instagram said the system would launch in some countries as early as March, with a global rollout later.
Facebook AI algorithms will learn from videos uploaded to the network
Facebook announced the Learning from Videos project, designed to automatically study audio, text, and visual representations based on data in publicly available videos uploaded to the platform.
According to the developers, by studying videos spanning almost every country and hundreds of languages, this project will help them continually improve core AI systems for applications such as content recommendations and compliance with the network’s rules.
The company also believes that Learning from Videos will provide entirely new opportunities to build self-learning algorithms.
“This is also part of our broader efforts to create machines that learn like humans — from any example, and not only those labeled by experts,” the Facebook developers say in the blog.
The initial application is now available in the Instagram Reels recommendation system — the new service intended to compete with TikTok.
The company plans to continue research into self-learning systems. It is not stated whether Learning from Videos will be available to external developers.
Microsoft has introduced AI-based noise cancellation in the desktop Skype
Microsoft announced the integration of AI-powered noise cancellation into the Skype desktop app for Mac and Windows.
To enable noise cancellation, users should go to Settings, navigate to the Sound tab, and choose one of three modes: Automatic, Low, and High.
Developers said the noise-suppression technology was originally created for Microsoft Teams. With the help of machine learning it analyzes the audio stream, separates clear speech from noise, and then deep neural networks cut out the noise, leaving only the user’s voice.
In developing the technology, developers used various datasets reflecting situations in which Skype users find themselves, such as speech volume, types of noises, and the environments from which users join online calls.
This feature is not yet available in the mobile and web versions of Skype.
Enthusiasts created Eminem deepfake track against patriarchy
The authors of the YouTube channel Calamity AI, using artificial intelligence, created the «[simple_tooltip content=’Высказывание в тексте одного репера неуважения к другому реперу’]diss[/simple_tooltip] of Eminem aimed at patriarchy.
The team wrote the lyrics for the future track using ShortlyAI – a text generator powered by GPT-3 from OpenA. For the input to the algorithm they gave two sentences:
«New Eminem song – diss against patriarchy. He takes the position of a man and speaks up for women. Verse No.1»
Generated texts they sent to 30HZ, a self-proclaimed creator of «synthetic parody songs and other badly written material». The producer synthesized the sound and turned the words into vocals.
The idea for the track emerged amid a March controversy. TikTok users drew attention to Eminem’s 2010 track “I like the way you lie” and found it praising violence against women.
Social media users launched a campaign to
