Miners do not need sector support, as their activity does not have social significance, said Anatoly Aksakov, head of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market, in an interview with Lenta.

The official noted that this sector of the market is already earning \”quite decent money\”.

“What are they, some orphans or beggars? Why help mining? What is the point? Are they producing socially significant products?”

Aksakov also said that this month the State Duma will hold the first meeting of a working group dedicated to cryptocurrencies.

As reported in November in the State Duma they announced preparation of a bill to regulate mining and created a working group for discussion. Earlier in September, Aksakov called for registering cryptocurrency mining as a form of entrepreneurship. This idea was supported by representatives of several ministries.

In the Ministry of Energy stated that mining does not fall under domestic needs, therefore the electricity used for it should not be billed at a subsidised tariff for households.

In December, State Duma deputy Andrey Lugovoy threatened to jail miners for illegal connection to power grids.
