Bill Gates envisions ditching Zoom and Skype in favour of metaverses by 2024

In two to three years, most virtual meetings will take place in the metaverses. That forecast was made by Microsoft founder Bill Gates in his blog.

“The idea is that, in the end, you will use your avatar to meet people in a virtual space that mimics the feel of being in a real room with them. For this, you will need something like VR headsets and motion-tracking gloves,” Gates wrote.

According to the billionaire, many people wrongly think that the quality of software behind such simulations will remain unchanged. He emphasised that the technological aspect of the metaverse is developing at a rapid pace, and over time this process will only accelerate.

Gates noted that most people currently lack the equipment needed to immerse themselves in the metaverses. However, in his view, the situation will soon change.

He said that in 2022 Microsoft plans to release an “interim version” of its VR kit, which uses “your webcam to capture the avatar’s animation used in the current 2D setting”.

“We still have a lot to work on, but we are approaching the threshold beyond which the technology will truly begin to recreate the experience of working together in an office,” Gates said.

On Thursday, December 9, the venture arm of the corporation, M12, led a $27 million funding round for Palm NFT Studio. The latter works with companies and brands, enabling them to create NFT projects on Ethereum.

Bank of America described metaverses as “a huge opportunity” for the digital assets industry.
