Bitcoin advocate Andrew Yang seeks New York mayoralty

The businessman and former U.S. presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who urged transparent and clear regulation of the cryptocurrency industry, has decided to run for the post of mayor of New York. His surname appeared on the relevant lists.

The New York Campaign Finance Board confirmed Financial Times that Yang filed the documents required to begin fundraising for his bid. The businessman has yet to comment on his decision.

Yang’s presidential campaign began in November 2017 with a promise of an unconditional basic income of $1000 for all adult Americans. He also called for nationwide regulation of cryptocurrencies rather than state-by-state rules.

The presidential candidate proposed a clear tax policy, define token status (recognising the existence of utility tokens) and the powers of federal agencies.

In July 2019, Yang supporters launched the independent political action committee Humanity Forward Fund and implemented the ability to donate Bitcoin via Lightning wallets.

In February 2020, Andrew Yang announced that he was dropping out of the race for the U.S. presidency.
