Bitfury selects site for Ukrainian data center at a nuclear power plant

A data center from Bitfury Group and Energoatom, using the capacity of Ukraine’s nuclear power plant, will be located in Rivne Oblast, according to the site of the regional administration.

The data center will be built in the city of Varash, where the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant is located. Its capacity will be 250 MW, with potential to be expanded to 500 MW.

According to the press service, work on the project has been under way for about a year.

\n

According to representatives of Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation, a network of data centers powered by nuclear power plants will \”create the necessary conditions for implementing the state’s policy in the field of digitalization\”.

\n

ForkLog has sought additional comment from Energoatom and Bitfury representatives.

\n

In May, the Ministry of Energy tasked Energoatom with studying the possibilities of cryptocurrency mining at Ukraine’s NPPs.

\n

A subsidiary of Bitfury Holding BV and Energoatom signed a memorandum on the construction of data centers on the territory of the NPPs in October. 

\n

The agreement contemplates creating data centers with total energy consumption that could reach 2 GW.
