The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has unveiled a new research division, CIA Labs. It will study blockchain and new technologies, according to a statement.

The development of “scientific and technological solutions in support of the CIA mission” will involve agency personnel, educational institutions, and the private sector. Details of the collaboration at CIA Labs have not been disclosed.

Beyond blockchain, the division is interested in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and augmented reality.

“CIA Labs will focus on improving and refining existing products, as well as creating new ways to solve scientific and technological problems,” the statement notes.

Earlier in September, two Swiss universities created the Blockchain Technology Association. The ecosystem brings together research institutes and private companies to develop the sector.
