Elon Musk–themed cryptocurrency scam nets criminals more than $100,000

The scammers exploited the hype surrounding Elon Musk’s appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) to defraud users of more than $100,000 in cryptocurrency.

The SNL themed campaign isn’t stopped yesterday, so that «at least around 20» is at least around 25, but more likely around/over 30…
Won’t even check how much they made because the some 100k $ worth coins until yesterday morning was already too much.

According to MalwareHunterTeam, the scammers created more than 30 fake accounts of Tesla, SpaceX and SNL. Some of them received verification.

Users were invited to participate in a cryptocurrency giveaway. To receive the ‘reward’, the attackers asked them to send a small amount of Bitcoin, Ethereum or Dogecoin to their wallets.

MalwareHunterTeam noted that this type of scam has existed for a long time, but Twitter has yet to address the problem.

In November 2020, criminals, on behalf of Elon Musk announced a cryptocurrency giveaway under a tweet by Donald Trump.

In July of the same year, hackers breached the Twitter accounts of the billionaire and other celebrities, posting messages about a fake distribution of 5000 BTC.

As reported, on May 8, 2021, Musk became the host of SNL. At the end of the show he invited his mother on stage and joked that her gift for Mother’s Day would be Dogecoin.
