Ethereum developers to move Goerli testnet to Proof-of-Stake

The Ethereum team will move the Goerli testnet to the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus algorithm when the network’s cumulative difficulty (TTD) reaches 10 790 000. According to developers, this is expected to occur between August 6 and 12.

As with other testnets, the merge will occur in several stages. The Beacon Chain consensus layer has already been deployed — it is named Prater.

The next step is activating the Bellatrix upgrade, intended to prepare the final merge. According to lead developer Tim Beiko, this will occur on epoch #112 260, which the network will reach on August 4 at about 15:24 (Kyiv/Moscow time).

After the merge, the updated testnet will be called Paris. Node operators will need to update clients for the consensus and execution layers. ETH holders do not need to take any action.

On July 6, developers successfully migrated the Sepolia testnet to the PoS algorithm. In June, a similar event occurred on the Ropsten testnet.

On July 26, the team implemented the tenth, final “shadow fork” of the Ethereum mainnet. This occurred 26 hours earlier than planned, as the TTD threshold was reached sooner than expected.

“Shadow forks” allow developers to test specific aspects of migrating the network to PoS. The latest initiative was aimed at studying the changes that will occur after the Goerli and Prater merge.

Earlier, developers preliminarily approved the migration of the Ethereum mainnet to the PoS consensus algorithm on 19 September 2022.
