EU to oblige tech giants to tackle deepfakes

The European Commission will update rules obliging companies such as Meta, Twitter and Google to remove deepfakes, disinformation, and fake accounts. According to Reuters.

On June 16, 2022, the European Commission plans to present an updated code of practice for countering disinformation. According to the document, tech giants should develop tools to verify information and cooperate with fact-checking organisations.

They will be required to report on removed bots, the number of moderators in each country, as well as artificial intelligence systems used to combat fake content.

According to media reports, more than 30 companies, including Meta, Twitter, Google, Microsoft and TikTok, are set to sign the updated code. They will be required to publish reports for each individual EU country, rather than pan-European or global statistics.

Penalties for breaches of the rules could reach up to 6% of annual turnover.

In April, the EU agreed the Digital Services Act, increasing the responsibility of tech giants in relation to recommendation algorithms and targeted advertising.

In the same month, Elon Musk supported the project to regulate social networks.
