FBI chief expresses concern over China’s AI program
The FBI Director Christopher Wray said he was ‘deeply concerned’ about the Chinese government’s artificial intelligence program. Voice of America reports.
The FBI director voiced his concerns during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to Wray, Beijing’s AI ambitions rest on a vast trove of inventions and confidential data ‘which they have stolen over the years’.
The official says that if China is not checked, it could use the technology for hacking operations, theft of intellectual property, and repression.
‘That’s what concerns us deeply. I think everyone here should be deeply concerned,’ he said.
‘AI is a classic example of technology to which I react in the same way every time. I think: Wow, we can do this?’ And then: ‘Oh my God, they can do this’,
Earlier, former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt warned that the United States’ technological lead over China was diminishing.
In October 2022, American lawmakers asked to examine imported from China autonomous driving technologies for national security threats.
In the same month, the Biden administration imposed restrictions on the supply of AI chips to the PRC.
In September a group of experts released a forecast that by 2030 China will overtake global technological leadership from the United States and its allies.
