Genesis Digital Assets launches a ‘green’ data centre for Bitcoin mining

American mining company Genesis Digital Assets (GDA) expanded its Bitcoin mining capacity in Sweden with the launch of a new data centre.

The facility is located in the north of the country near a hydroelectric plant in Porjus with a capacity of 417 MW. It is expected that the GDA venture will use clean energy from a local supplier.

Initial capacity at the data centre will be 8 MW. The company plans to upgrade the site in the near term.

“We strive for leadership in the Bitcoin mining industry, setting an example for other players, minimising our environmental footprint,” said co-founder and chief executive Abdumalik Mirakhmedov.

As part of its commitments, the company is working with local contractors to organise and manage operations at the new facility.

The facility previously operated as a traditional data centre and is the third mining site opened by GDA in Sweden in the last three years.

Under its management are 19 data centres in North America, Europe and Central Asia with a total capacity of over 400 MW.

Earlier in August, GDA opened three new facilities on the east coast of South Carolina, aimed at using energy from renewable sources for mining.
