Media names potential successor to Heath Tarbert as CFTC chair

A Georgetown University academic, Chris Brammer, has become the frontrunner for the chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Reuters reports. On Thursday, 21 January, Heath Tarbert left the post.

Tarbert joined the CFTC in 2019. Under his leadership, the agency approved a definition of cryptocurrency delivery to customers, announced a competition to develop tools to track unregistered derivative offerings, and unveiled plans for a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets.

In 2019 Tarbert said that cryptocurrencies do not threaten the financial system, unlike a global stablecoin. Earlier, the CFTC chief called Ethereum a commodity and allowed the possibility of regulated futures based on the asset.

In 2020 Tarbert urged accelerating the legalization of cryptocurrencies and said regulatory approaches should be guided by broader principles.

As reported earlier, on January 18, 2021, financier Gary Gensler took the post as chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
