Meta Unveils First Smart Glasses with Display

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has introduced the Meta Ray-Ban Display, the first “smart glasses” equipped with an integrated display. These can be controlled through hand gestures via a bracelet powered by neurotechnology.

The new gadget serves as an intermediary between Ray-Ban Meta and the experimental augmented reality glasses Orion, which can overlay 3D images onto a user’s field of vision using a wireless computing module.

The Meta Neural Band bracelet operates on electromyography and is included with the Meta Ray-Ban Display.

“These glasses have the classic style you expect from Ray-Ban, but they are also the first of their kind with a high-resolution display and a fully functional Meta Neural Band,” said Zuckerberg.

The new gadget allows users to watch videos on the screen or view and respond to text messages. The screen does not obstruct the view and disappears when not in use.

During the demonstration, the Meta CEO unsuccessfully attempted several times to call Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth.

“This is, well… you know, it happens,” he commented.

The glasses will be available for sale in the United States on September 30.

Additionally, Zuckerberg introduced the Oakley Meta Vanguard, smart glasses designed for athletes engaged in extreme sports like snowboarding or mountain biking. They have a more dynamic appearance compared to the “traditional” version and are equipped with a button for photos and videos. The price is $499.

The device operates for up to nine hours without recharging, records video in 3K, and features loudspeakers. It can connect to Garmin fitness watches to monitor heart rates using Meta AI. Pre-orders are open.

Another new gadget is the updated version of the first Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses (Gen 2). They are priced at $379 compared to $299 for the 2023 model. They last twice as long on a single charge—up to eight hours—and feature an improved camera that records in 3K Ultra HD.

Zuckerberg announced Horizon TV, a service for watching series, sports events, and films through Quest VR headsets. Among Meta’s partners providing content for the app, he mentioned Disney and Universal Pictures.

Back in July 2024, Zuckerberg stated that in the future, everyone will wear devices with artificial intelligence.
