MetaMask’s monthly active users top 5 million

Over the past six months, the monthly active users (MAU) of ConsenSys’s Ethereum wallet MetaMask have grown fivefold, reaching 5 million.

MAU numbers in the one-million range reached in a year from October 2019 to October 2020.

According to ConsenSys, the surge in recent months was driven by the popularity of decentralized finance (DeFi) services and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The company noted that user interest is increasingly drawn to the MetaMask Swaps feature. Introduced in October last year, the option allows users to swap tokens on decentralized exchanges, aggregators, and market makers directly within the Ethereum wallet.

With regard to the app’s core markets, ConsenSys said that India and Indonesia are in the top five, while Vietnam and Nigeria are in the top ten.

“These people are increasingly using MetaMask to earn additional income or for long-term investments. Many of them do not have access to the local banking system and therefore need alternative technologies that could serve as savings accounts,” the statement said.

MetaMask became available on mobile devices in September 2020.
