Microsoft uses AI to create an ‘endless remix’
Microsoft, together with Asian media company 88rising and a record label, used artificial intelligence to create a generator for an ‘endless remix’. The developers based it on the new track ‘Too Many Tears’ by Indonesian rapper Hue Warren, according to Engadget.
According to the developers, the remix adapts to the time of day for different moods, and also creates pastoral landscapes that visualise the melody. Thanks to the ‘endless’ duration of the track, there is more room for longer, contemplative musical loops.
To visualise the remix, 88rising’s technical specialists headed to the San Gabriel Valley to find views they deemed the best. They then set up a camera and streamed video 24/7 to Microsoft Azure virtual machines.
The AI looked for four main ‘events’ for analysis: morning, day, dusk and night. When it detected transitions between them, the algorithm generated sound according to the settings and smoothed the transitions.
Microsoft noted the symbolism of using San Gabriel views, where Asian-American communities are largely located.
“88rising’s multifaceted approach to showcasing Asian and Asian-American artists and culture is impressive. They have demonstrated willingness to experiment and collaborate,” said Amy Sorokas, Microsoft’s Director of Strategic Partnerships.
This is Microsoft’s third music project powered by AI, and the first related to electronic music. The audiovisual visualization of the track is available at TooManyTears.AI.
