According to the developers, blockchain-based collectible items create “scarcity and exclusivity,” which runs counter to Minecraft’s principles. The team noted that it seeks to provide all players with the same content, regardless of the server used.
“Speculative pricing and an investment mindset around NFTs distract from the game and encourage profit-seeking, which, in our view, is incompatible with the long-term comfort and success of our gamers,” the developers added.
They also highlighted the risks of fraud and potential loss of funds associated with NFTs.
“To ensure players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology cannot be integrated into Minecraft’s client and server applications. It also cannot be used to create NFTs tied to any in-game content, including worlds, skins, character items, or other mods,” the statement said.
They also pledged to monitor the technology’s development, noting that over time it might enable the above principles.
“However, for now we have no plans to implement blockchain in Minecraft,” they concluded.
Earlier in January 2022, the French game giant Ubisoft faced backlash from users over the attempt to launch the NFT platform Quartz.
The leadership of the Japanese studio PlatinumGames spoke out against the encroachment of digital property into the industry. Their compatriots at Square Enix, by contrast, stated an interest in blockchain and NFTs.
