New York’s new mayor urges teaching cryptocurrencies in schools
The newly elected mayor of New York, Eric Adams, in a comment to CNN urged local schools to prepare students for a ‘new way of thinking’ tied to blockchain technology and digital assets.
The politician noted the low awareness of cryptocurrencies among his young voters:
“When I spoke about blockchain and bitcoin, young people paused and asked me: ‘What is that?’”
As an argument for including this topic in school curricula, Adams described digital assets as “a new way of paying for goods and services around the world”.
According to him, New York must remain a hub of innovation. To this end, the newly elected mayor also plans to require local businesses to accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a form of payment.
Earlier, Adams stated his intention to receive his first three salaries in digital gold after taking office in January 2022. He supported the Miami mayor Francis Suárez’s analogous initiative.
During his campaign, Adams pledged to turn the city into a center of the Bitcoin industry. He will also study the prospect of creating his own city-wide digital currency modeled on MiamiCoin.
Earlier, many cryptocurrency companies were forced to leave New York due to its BitLicense regime, whose requirements are regarded as among the strictlyest in the industry at the state level.
