“Supernets are blockchain infrastructure that provides a modular framework for creating fast, scalable and secure networks with expanded features and capabilities,” — it says in the description of the initiative.

The dedicated Polygon Supernet will allow Nexon to tailor the blockchain to the needs of mass online games. MapleStory has 180 million registered users and a developed in-game economy.

A solution based on the new technology will enable expansion, giving players the ability to earn and collect NFTs. Collectible digital items will unlock various advantages or useful features in the ecosystem.

Founded in 1994, the Korean company serves more than 60 online games with over 1.3 billion registered users. In 2021, Nexon invested $100 million in Bitcoin. Media also reported the publisher’s interest in the acquisition of the cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb, but the company denied this information.

“By choosing Polygon Supernets to support MapleStory Universe, Nexon sends a strong signal to the gaming industry about the future of blockchain in games,” said Ryan Wyatt, president of Polygon Labs.

In March, Immutable signed a partnership agreement with a blockchain project to accelerate the development and deployment of Web3 games.
