Over 1,000 companies affected by data leaks from ransomware attacks

From January to October 2020, more than 1,000 companies suffered data leaks resulting from ransomware attacks. This is indicated by a cybersecurity study by Trend Micro and Nikkei.

According to the data, since 2019 the number of attacks has surged, with hackers not only blocking user access to devices but also threatening to disclose data and demanding ransom.

One of the recent victims became the Japanese game developer Capcom. RagnarLocker ransomware operators stole about 1 TB of files from Capcom’s corporate networks, including customer and employee information.

Some time later Capcom reported a data breach, in which information relating to around 350,000 people was reportedly exposed.

Most companies report such incidents to authorities rather than paying the ransom, Nikkei notes.

Earlier, U.S. authorities urged not to pay ransomware operators under the threat of sanctions.

Earlier, Positive Technologies reported a rise in the number of hacker attacks using encryption malware in the third quarter of 2020.

According to Group-IB data, from November 2019 to November 2020 hackers conducted over 500 publicly reported ransomware attacks using encryption malware, and the total damage from their activity exceeded $1 billion.
