Poll: Majority of Salvadorans Not Ready to Use Bitcoin

Only 20% of Salvadoran residents supported President Nayib Bukele’s initiative to recognise Bitcoin as legal tender, according to Disruptiva researchers.

The Salvadoran parliament approved the bill recognizing the first cryptocurrency as legal tender in early June. The document will come into force on 7 September 2021.

The opposition called unconstitutional the legalisation of digital gold.

The initiative also failed to find traction among local remittance services — only a few integrated Bitcoin support.

In late June, Bukele announced a distribution of $30 in the first cryptocurrency to every adult resident of El Salvador. According to the president, the Bitcoin wallet Chivo is compatible with other similar applications and will not become mandatory to use.
