Reddit user angers fiancée by gifting NFT as engagement ring

A Reddit user going by HandHoldingClub told of a broken engagement over his cryptocurrency hobby.

His girlfriend Jenna (a pseudonym), whom he has been dating for four years, is very particular about financial matters and insists on saving. Not long ago the couple had a conflict because HandHoldingClub lost a substantial portion of their joint savings in Dogecoin.

“I’ve recovered half of the lost assets using stock-market options, but then another setback followed. Jenna forced me to quit trading, but I’m not giving up hope that we can grow our money through investing,” the Reddit user said.

Recently he found an NFT that, in his view, would appeal to Jenna because it had a meaning that was “understandable to both of us”:

“I’ve spent almost all of my savings on it, because I believe the token’s price could potentially rise to $1 million and we could buy a mansion with that money. I presented the NFT to her as an engagement ring.”

\n

The girlfriend did not appreciate the gift, calling it “selfish and stupid.” HandHoldingClub asked the thread’s commenters for help:

“I don’t want to sell the NFT, because something like this only happens once in a lifetime, but I’m not going to abandon my girlfriend. What should I do?”

\n

Respondents accused the post author of childish behaviour and ludomania.

\n

“Seriously? Your girlfriend has clearly made it clear that she doesn’t like your crypto hobby, and you continue with it? By doing so you’ve shown her that you’re not the man to start a family with. You’re not dependable; you don’t respect her opinion,” they wrote.

Commenters also suggested selling the NFT immediately and buying a real ring with the proceeds to make amends with the fiancée.

\n

One user questioned the story’s authenticity and the existence of HandHoldingClub’s fiancée, finding a dating-subreddit post less than a year old posted by him in the dating-subreddit post.
