Solana and the Lightning Network draw Stripe co-founder’s attention
Stripe co-founder and president John Collison did not rule out that, in the future, the payments company may resume support for cryptocurrencies. In an interview with CNBC, he noted that there are many solutions in the market that have attracted his attention.
“There have recently been many developments aimed at making cryptocurrencies better. In particular, to make them scalable and usable as a means of payment,” he said.
Collison noted that he has taken note of a number of innovative projects such as the Solana blockchain and the Bitcoin Lightning Network for micropayments.
In 2015, Stripe allowed its customers to make Bitcoin payments, but dropped support for digital gold in early 2018 due to its volatility and long transaction confirmations.
Later, Collison did not rule out restoring support for Bitcoin in the future.
In 2019, the company exited Meta’s Diem project. Stripe officials at the time said the stablecoin had potential, but the company would focus for now on supporting projects that develop online commerce globally.
In February 2021, former Bank of England governor Mark Carney вошел joined the board of the payments processor, who had previously initiated consideration of launching a national digital currency in the United Kingdom.
In October 2021, Stripe announced the recruitment of developers and designers for its cryptocurrency division “to build the future of Web3 payments”.
