State Duma requires election candidates to disclose cryptocurrency purchases

The State Duma of the Russian Federation has passed a law obliging candidates taking part in elections to disclose data on expenditures for acquiring digital financial assets (DFAs) and cryptocurrencies. See MK.ru.

Under the law, candidates taking part in elections must provide information on their own expenditures, as well as those of their spouse and any minor children, for each transaction involving the purchase of DFAs over the past three years, if the amount exceeds the combined income of the candidate and their spouse over that period.

In addition, data on sources of funds for buying DFAs or cryptocurrencies must be provided.

The document amends the laws on presidential and State Duma elections, on the procedure for forming the Federation Council, political parties, anti-corruption measures, and other related laws.

The law will take effect ten days after its official publication.

In 2020, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree, which obliges officials and candidates for the relevant posts to provide information on their digital financial assets.

In May 2021, the Duma approved the bill on declaring cryptocurrencies by candidates in the first reading.
