Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) shut down the mining farm, which the owners illegally connected to a transformer substation in Chernihiv Oblast.

More than 150 ASIC miners were kept in leased warehouse premises. To conceal the electricity theft, the perpetrators used specialized equipment to underreport the meter readings.

According to the agency, the substation to which the miners connected also serves the Nezhin Emergency Medical Service, Nezhin Vodokanal and other facilities.

“The actions of the perpetrators could have led to emergencies with uninterrupted electricity supply to the population and businesses – part of the region could have been left without light and water,” the SBU said.

In two months the losses from the miners’ activities exceeded 3 million hryvnias (over $109,000).

During the search, law enforcement seized cryptocurrency mining equipment and other gear.

The investigation continues.

Earlier, in February, SBU officers identified crypto-farm assemblers in the Lviv region who stole the mined cryptocurrency.
