The Russian Alexander Vinnik will remain in a French prison until his extradition to the authorities of Greece. This is сообщает TASS, citing a decision by the Paris Court of Appeal.
The decision was effectively a formality, as the results of the review of his dossier were announced on the eve of August 3.
Earlier, the U.S. authorities withdrew the extradition request filed in 2020 to extradite the Russian from France.
Earlier, Alexander Vinnik was detained in Greece in 2017 on suspicion of laundering $4 billion through the BTC-e cryptocurrency exchange. At the same time, U.S. authorities seized the BTC-e domain.
Subsequently, the Greek court granted the extradition request for Vinnik at the request of the United States, Russia and France. In December 2019, Greece’s Ministry of Justice decided on sequential extradition of the Russian first to France, and then to the United States and Russia.
In early 2020, Vinnik was extradited from Greece to France. There, he was sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of €100,000. The defence attempted to appeal the decision, but the court upheld the verdict.
