Vitalik Buterin unveils updated Ethereum development roadmap

Vitalik Buterin published an updated roadmap for Ethereum’s development. The project team intends to address the ‘MEV problem’ and fully integrate into the blockchain technology zk-SNARK.

According to Buterin, the updated diagram specifies the steps for implementing each phases of Ethereum’s development and underscores the role of quantum resistance for the future of the blockchain.

A new phase appears in the presented roadmap — The Scourge. In its framework, developers plan to “ensure reliable and fair inclusion into the blockchain of verifiably neutral transactions, and also address MEV issues”.

Another change concerns the fourth phase — The Verge. It was previously focused on integrating the Verkle tree, which provides a proof for a user to verify the authenticity of the entire data set.

Now, under The Verge, they also plan to simplify block verification and render Ethereum a quantum-resistant network, fully supporting zk-SNARK.

Earlier, Buterin named the zk-Rollups-based protocol, built on this technology, as the priority tool for solving Ethereum’s scalability problem.

Arcane Assets’ Director of Investments, Eric Wall, noted that the updated roadmap does not use the term ‘sharding’. In his view, zk-Rollups is the more efficient technology.

Flashbots described the absence neutral MEV-Boost relay in the Ethereum network as a ‘failure’.
