One in five Russians fears losing their job to automation

One in five Russians fears losing their job to automation. This comes from a Salary.ru service survey, according to «РИА Новости».

In an online interview, 1,992 respondents from across Russia participated. The researchers found that those most afraid of losing their jobs are salespeople, cashiers, storekeepers, drivers, couriers, waiters and cleaners.

Medics, educators, cooks and IT specialists were more confident about the demand for their professions, the study says.

Women are more worried than men about becoming redundant — 64% and 36%, respectively.

Experts say routine professions will disappear in the future. For example, cashiers in supermarkets are already being replaced by self-service zones, and live customer-support operators by chatbots.

Respondents believe the number of familiar occupations will shrink by 20%, but in the coming decades new jobs will emerge in sectors such as digital technologies, genetics and biology, and artificial intelligence.

Not all Russians support the widespread use of technologies. 17% are concerned about total digitalisation, and 2% of respondents fear a machine uprising and the enslavement of humanity by machines.

In June, the study showed that more than half of Russians would like to replace deputies with artificial intelligence.

In May, the head of Sberbank, Herman Gref, urged to prepare for losing work due to robotisation and to master new professions.

Nobel laureate in economics Daniel Kahneman believes that machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, but for now it remains distant.
