PlatinumGames sees no benefit in NFTs for gamers or developers
The intrusion of NFTs into the gaming industry does not have a positive impact on either creators or users. Such a view was expressed in an interview with VGC by the leaders of the Japanese console game developer PlatinumGames.
CEO Atsushi Inaba and Vice President Hideki Kamiya described the growing industry interest in blockchain and digital assets as “disappointing.” The managers noted that the studio “really doesn’t think about it.”
“I understand that this is a hot topic right now; it’s gaining momentum. But the way this happens is focused on profit for companies, and it doesn’t have a positive impact on creators or users in any sense. It’s disappointing to observe this,” Inaba said.
According to him, people who push NFTs to game companies “press for profit,” not for the technology’s benefit.
His stance was echoed by Kamiya, who called his interest in NFT “zero.”
“In the future, if this develops in a way that has a positive side for users, perhaps I will take an interest. But at the moment I don’t see that,” he added.
Asked whether he was surprised at how quickly such companies as Konami picked up the NFT topic, Kamiya stated:
“Not really. If there’s money to be made, Konami will be there in an instant!”
Earlier in January 2022, the French gaming giant Ubisoft faced negative user reaction to the attempt to launch the NFT marketplace Quartz.
