Polygon ends support for Polygon Edge developer tool

The Polygon Labs developers announced the discontinuation of support for Polygon Edge — an early open-source solution for creating EVM-compatible networks.

Support has shifted toward the new Polygon CDK, which provides the basis for second-layer protocols based on zero-knowledge proofs, according to the blog.

“The environment in which Edge was developed has changed, and Polygon Labs now supports a solution that gives developers the ability to build within the (future) unified L2 zk-based ecosystem,” the company said.

Several protocols, including Immutable, Astar, Canto, Gnosis Pay and Manta Network, have already committed to using the Polygon CDK.

In 2022, based on Polygon Edge, the Dogechain blockchain, linked to the meme cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE), was launched. In the technical document of the network, the tool is mentioned 22 times.

The original Dogecoin protocol lacked smart contract support as it was a fork of Litecoin. Creating an EVM-compatible Dogechain was intended to unlock opportunities for building DeFi projects and NFTs.

However, the new blockchain did not receive support from community leaders. Jens Wiechers, a member of the Dogecoin Foundation’s executive board, said that the organization has no involvement with the network. The meme-token creators also rejected any involvement with Dogechain.

Claims in paid media that Dogecoin launched a \”Dogechain\” test network are false. Neither @Dogecoin/@dogecoin_devs, nor @BillyM2k, @ummjackson or others associated with @DogecoinFdn are in any way affiliated with the token.

In November, gas costs on Polygon surged almost 1000%, to around 5000 Gwei (~$0.1) amid the popularity of Ordinals tokens POLS.

Earlier in October, the Polygon team launched a smart contract on the Ethereum mainnet for the new Polygon Ecosystem Token (POL), intended to replace MATIC. Details of the proposal for the new asset appeared in September.

In late June, Polygon Labs unveiled the proposed Polygon 2.0 architecture.
